Protein or moisture. Almost every damaged-hair question comes down to that choice, and clients at Sølvi Salon get it wrong roughly half the time when they walk in. Use the wrong treatment and you make the problem worse. Here is the diagnostic and the fix.
The Core Concept
Hair has a balance of two things: keratin protein that gives it structure, and water and lipids that give it softness and stretch. Damage tips the balance in one direction. The right treatment tips it back.
The Stretch Test
This is the fastest way to diagnose.
- Take one strand from the back of your head.
- Wet it.
- Pinch each end and slowly pull.
Healthy hair: stretches about 30 percent, then returns to shape.
Protein deficient: stretches a lot, feels gummy, does not return.
Moisture deficient: barely stretches, snaps quickly, feels brittle.
Signs of Protein Overload
- Hair feels stiff or straw-like.
- Color looks matte, not shiny.
- Strand snaps instead of stretches.
- Frizz increases even with conditioner.
Signs of Moisture Overload
- Hair feels limp, mushy, or gummy wet.
- No hold in styling, curls fall flat.
- Hair gets weighed down by conditioners.
- Shedding or breakage increases.
How to Fix Protein Deficiency
Use a protein treatment or bond builder. Start with once every 14 days. Products in the repair and bond builder collection are built for this. Follow each protein treatment with a moisture mask to rebalance.
How to Fix Moisture Deficiency
Deep conditioning masks, leave-ins, and sealing oils. Apply weekly. Use warm towel or steam for deeper penetration. The masks and treatments collection has options that target hydration specifically.
Why Most People Get It Wrong
Dry-looking hair reads as "needs moisture" even when the actual problem is protein loss. Hair with no shine and no elasticity gets a moisture mask thrown at it, which makes it limper. Runs the balance the wrong direction.
The 7-Day Rebalance
If you suspect damage but cannot tell which direction:
- Day 1: Clarifying wash to remove buildup.
- Day 3: Protein or bond treatment.
- Day 5: Moisture mask.
- Day 7: Reassess with the stretch test.
When Professional Help Is Needed
If your hair is breaking at the hairline or snapping in your hands, do not experiment at home. This is severe damage and needs a stylist to assess. An in-salon bond treatment plus a cut is usually the right call. Our team at Sølvi Salon evaluates damage level at consultation.
When to See a Stylist
If you cannot tell what your hair needs, come in for an assessment. Five minutes and a few strands is all we need to build a real recovery plan.
